San Miguel stays patient

San Miguel Beer vows to exert a lot of patience while waiting for the return of star playmaker Terrence Romeo and import Thomas Robinson for the Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup.

Beermen team manager Gee Abanilla told Daily Tribune that they are in a hurry to activate Romeo from a back injury that he sustained in the previous season.

In fact, despite Romeo riding the bench, the Beermen were still deadly as they went on to capture the Philippine Cup title last month.

He last saw action for the Beermen in the Governors’ Cup last season in which he averaged 12.1 points, 3.9 assists and 2.8 rebounds per game.

“We’re looking at bringing him after the required full recovery time. We expect that he can join us by December,” Abanilla said in a telephone conversation.

On the same note, Abanilla stressed that they remain patient over the return of Robinson, the noted American forward who had to fly back to the United States after sustaining a spine injury prior the start of this midseason conference.

Robinson has the shiniest credentials among the current batch of imports as he was taken by the Sacramento Kings with the fifth overall pick in the 2012 National Basketball Association Rookie Draft, just behind top pick Anthony Davis, Bradley Beal and Dion Waiters.

Should he get the green light to see action, he will officially become the highest NBA draft pick to see action in the PBA behind Dennis Hopson, who was taken third by the New Jersey Nets in 1987 before suiting up for Purefoods in 1996.

“Hopefully, he can play for us starting next month,” Abanilla said.

With Robinson at sickbay, another former NBA draftee in Diamond Stone reinforced the Beermen when they opened their campaign against Blackwater last week.
