In recent years, the Philippines has witnessed a significant upsurge in interest in electric vehicles, driven by the increasing need for sustainable and eco-friendly transportation solutions.
As urbanization continues to rapidly progress, the country is seeking ways to reduce its carbon emissions and, at the same time, build a more resilient transport sector.
The commercial sector, in particular, plays a crucial role in this transformation. Within this framework, a groundbreaking development has emerged that solidifies the country’s position in the global commercial EV scene.
DB Schenker Philippines, the dynamic local subsidiary of the globally renowned German firm DB Schenker, known for its exceptional logistics solutions and supply chain management, has set a milestone in the country’s EV industry.
This 150-year-old firm, with its rich legacy and a strong commitment to innovation and sustainability, recently took ownership of the first-ever commercially available, fully electric truck in the country — the Foton Tornado 3.6 EV Truck.
Foton trucks and commercial vehicles have earned a remarkable reputation in the Philippines. They are distributed in the country by Foton Motor Philippines Inc., a company deeply invested in leading the electrification of commercial mobility in the Philippines.
With the introduction of the Foton Tornado 3.6 EV, the company brings a groundbreaking electric truck, priced at P3.6 million, into the local market.
“We at Foton Motor Philippines are thrilled to have been chosen by DB Schenker Philippines to be the provider of their first fully electric truck, the Foton Tornado 3.6 EV Truck. It is an honor for us to be an integral part of this game-changing partnership,” commented Foton Philippines general manager Levy Santos.
The Foton Tornado 3.6 EV Truck impressively incorporates the EV technology found in premium electric cars and SUVs.
Equipped with a permanent-magnet synchronous motor, it boasts peak outputs of 154 horsepower and 300 Newton meters of torque. This powerful truck can swiftly accelerate from zero to 50 km/h in just 9 seconds and can reach a top speed of 90 km/h. Its driving range on a full charge extends to 208 kilometers (as per the global WLTP standards).
Convenient charging options include both AC and DC chargers, with the latter reducing charging time between 2-4 hours (from 20 to 100 percent charge).
Despite the advanced technology, the Foton Tornado 3.6 EV Truck maintains a traditional hydraulic braking system to facilitate ease of maintenance and repairs. It showcases an impressive grade ability of 20 percent, representing the steepest hill the truck can climb using maximum torque at the lowest gear.
Specs-wise, the Foton Tornado 3.6 EV Truck is highly competitive. It carries a gross vehicle weight of 6,000 kilograms, with a substantial payload of 3,600 kilograms and a curb weight of 2,400 kilograms.
In terms of comfort, convenience and safety, the truck doesn’t disappoint. It comes equipped with an air conditioning system, a multimedia audio system, an adjustable steering wheel, power windows, central locking with a remote key, a reverse sensor, ABS, and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, among other features.
“It is Foton Motor Philippines’ aim to help Filipino businesses achieve a zero-cost strategy on fuel, experience more efficient logistics, lower operating costs, and reduced carbon footprint while enjoying accessible charging opportunities and excellent aftersales services,” added Santos.
Over the last 16 years, Foton Motor Philippines has been consistently leveraging its strengths, making it the first Chinese brand to break into the Top 10 car companies in the Philippines in terms of sales volume.
It has established itself as one of the bestselling automotive brands in the country and a leader in the commercial vehicle industry. Its diverse lineup of passenger vehicles, modern public transport, light-, medium-, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment has helped it forge robust partnerships with substantial local, regional, and multinational companies such as J&T Express, Shopee Philippines, YTO Express, Flash Express, Coca-Cola, Arrow Go Express, GoGo Xpress, San Jose del Monte Transport Cooperative, and even the province of Pampanga.
This milestone collaboration between DB Schenker Philippines and Foton Motor Philippines signals a promising future for commercial EVs in the Philippines, further cementing the country’s commitment to sustainable transport solutions.
As the electric revolution continues to unfold, the potential of this burgeoning industry becomes more evident with leading players like DB Schenker and Foton at the forefront of this transformation.
