PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — Sarina Bolden struck for the Philippine national women’s football squad as she towed the FIFA World Cup-bound Filipinas to a 1-0 win over Malaysia on Saturday in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games.
Filipinas head coach Alex Stajcic lauded Sarina Bolden’s resiliency after her last-gasp goal against the Malaysians to keep their gold medal hopes alive.
In Group A standings, the Philippines is currently at second with a 1-0-1 win-draw-loss record.
“Sarina is a classic example of someone who dug really deep to find a winner and try to inspire the team and kept us alive by the skin of our teeth,” Stajcic said.
“We have to win to stay alive. We can’t leave anything inside the locker room and we have to leave it on the pitch.”
After a 0-1 loss to Myanmar last 3 May, the Filipinas needed to win its last two matches Group A to advance to the semifinal.
A win over defending champion Vietnam will boost its chances of making the semifinal.
