Senator Christopher “Bong” Go has called on everyone to rally behind Gilas Pilipinas, the national men’s basketball team that is revving up for the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
“We filed Resolution No. 83 last week to review certain policies and laws aimed at helping Gilas Pilipinas. This is not to criticize but to help them,” Go said in an ambush interview.
Go was joined in filing by fellow senators Alan Peter Cayetano, Mark Villar, Francis Tolentino and Joel Villanueva.’
The public’s concern over Gilas Pilipinas reached fever-pitch after it fared miserably in the FIBA Asia Cup last month.
Before that, Gilas Pilipinas likewise had to settle for the silver medal in the lowly Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi last May.
The Philippines was attempting to extend its dominance in SEA Games basketball but Indonesia, a perennial whipping boy of the Philippines, scored a stunner.
“Let’s move forward and forget about the past. Let’s find ways on how to help the team since we are hosting the 2023 World Cup and regain our place among the powerhouse nations in Asian sports.”
“Let us all unite, not just the players, team owners, the PBA (Philippine Basketball Association), SBP (Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas)… everyone must come together, private and public sector. Let us all help each other so we can form a strong team.”
