Bachmann: WADA issue nears end

The Philippine Sports Commission is optimistic that the country will be able to waive its flag in the Paris Olympics and avoid getting banned from other tournaments such as the Southeast Asian Games and the Asian Games.

PSC chairperson Richard “Dickie” Bachmann told DAILY TRIBUNE that two of the four issues that called the attention of the World Anti-Doping Agency have been resolved through meetings and are looking forward to settling the remaining issues.

The PSC and the Philippine Anti-Doping Organization have been in talks with WADA and the Philippine Olympic Committee to make sure that the Philippines is up to standard according to the WADA Code.

“There’s four issues right now and it’s down to two. I can’t give you the specifics due to data privacy. We’re still working and we met with WADA this morning. Hopefully, we can get it done before the 21 days,” Bachmann said.

“It has been handled by PHI-NADO. The PSC is helping PHI-NADO get back on track and in our last meeting with WADA, and POC was there. The number one thing they said is to not blame each other.”

The year 2024 is expected to be a big year for the Philippines with the Paris Olympics drawing near.

Despite the ongoing talks with WADA, Bachmann said the PSC is ready to assist the national sports associations who are aiming for a spot in the Summer Games and assist in hosting tournaments for this year.

“We’re focused right now on the Olympics. Many NSA and athletes are still trying to qualify for the Olympics, but the funding and support is ready,” Bachmann said.

“It’s also a big year for hosting. We have a swimming event in Manila, there are also karate, wushu and volleyball events so it’s going to be a big year.”

The Paris Olympics kicks off in July.
