Phoenix hires young import

SOCIAL MEDIA

Phoenix will parade a new face in Kaleb Wesson in the Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup next month.

Fuel Masters head coach Topex Robinson confirmed to Daily Tribune that the 23-year-old youngster will arrive in the country on 30 August and will immediately join the Fuel Masters in their bid to come up with a deep playoff run amid the looming departure of star gunner Matthew Wright.

Robinson said the 6-foot-10 Wesson’s presence will be their first step as they move on from Wright, who will become a free agent once his contract expires on 30 August.

“Yes, he (Wesson) is arriving on the 30th. He is young and came from a good college program,” Robinson said.

“We are excited to learn from him. We are moving on from Matt and it will be a process.”

Wesson is a product of Ohio State and was a four-star recruit during his time with numerous citations during his collegiate stint.

His impressive resume, however, wasn’t enough as he went undrafted during the 2020 National Basketball Association (NBA) Annual Rookie Draft and eventually played for Santa Cruz Warriors in the G League.

He went overseas that same year and suited up for Hapoel Gilboa Halil in Israel, before getting signed by another Israeli club Maccabi Rishon LeZion.

Wesson last played for Indios de Mayaguez in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional in Puerto Rico and averaged 16.4 points and 7.9 rebounds in 15 outings.

Robinson is hoping that Wesson will be their long-awaited answer after failing to get a fitting import in the Governors’ Cup and a lackluster frontcourt that spelled their early elimination in the Philippine Cup.
