The Rizal Memorial and Philsports complexes no longer house Covid-19 patients, paving the way for their full use by athletes training for the Southeast Asian Games and Asian Games set next year.
Philippine Sports Commission officer-in-charge Olivia “Bong” Coo, in a radio interview, said the two facilities are undergoing renovations, particularly the athletes’ dormitories.
“Some repairs are major like in the coliseum. There’s still a lot of fixing to do. I was told that by 30 September, most of the facilities will be usable,” Coo said.
“We are aware that the athletes need to train and I hope a board will be formed to address their concerns immediately.”
Coo is the only sports commissioner appointed so far.
Without the five-man PSC board, Coo said requests from the national sports associations cannot be acted upon.
“I hope the board will be here sooner so that we can address their needs so that the athletes won’t get stressed,” Coo said.
“We are also working with the Philippine Olympic Committee to know which sports should be taken care of.”
