Major leagues called off their respective matches on Sunday as Metro Manila was placed under Signal No. 3 due to super typhoon “Karding.”
The Philippine Basketball Association scrapped the scheduled Commissioner’s Cup games between NLEX and Meralco at 4:30 p.m. as well as Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and Converge at 6:45 p.m. at the Mall of Asia Arena in preparation for the torrential rains and fierce winds brought by “Karding.”
The Bolts and the Kings were supposed to kick off their respective campaigns while NLEX and Converge were seeking to sustain their momentum after posting convincing wins last week.
The league said their matches, including the scheduled 3×3 Season 2 matches on Monday and Tuesday at Robinson’s Antipolo, will be held on a later date.
Also halted by “Karding” were the matches in the National Collegiate Athletic Association and Shakey’s Super League.
Upon consultation with commissioner Tonichi Pujante, the country’s oldest collegiate league decided to cancel the Season 98 games between College of Saint Benilde and Jose Rizal University at 12 p.m. as well as University of Perpetual Help System Dalta and San Beda University at 3 p.m. at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.
“We are suspending the games today due to storm signal No. 3 and will be rescheduled to a later date based on our NCAA guidelines,” NCAA vice chair Efren Supan said in a statement.
SSL president Ian Laurel, meanwhile, also postponed their scheduled quadruple header to keep the players, coaches, officials and fans safe from flash floods and strong winds.
College of Saint Benilde was supposed to clash with Letran College at 12 p.m. while Adamson University will battle Emilio Aguinaldo College in the 2 p.m. battle at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Then, University of Santo Tomas will tangle with Lyceum of the Philippines University at 4 p.m. before Shaq de los Santos makes his coaching debut for University of the Philippines when it faces Mapua University in the 6 p.m. nightcap.
Laurel said they will make some adjustments to accommodate the canceled matches.
“All ticket holders of 25 September games will be honored on the new schedule,” said Laurel, a day after the league had an explosive opening salvo that lasted for 13 hours with a total of 19 sets in just four matches.
