National University aims to complete a sweep of the second round and grab the top seeding in the crossover quarterfinals in a showdown with University of Perpetual Help in the Shakey’s Super League Collegiate Pre-season Championship today at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
The Pool E clash is set at 10:00 a.m.
The reigning University Athletic Association of the Philippines champions banked on the veteran trio of Bella Belen, Sheena Toring, and team captain Ces Robles in hurdling University of the Philippines, 25-21, 25-16, 25-20, last Sunday for a 2-0 carryover win-loss record.
“Our goal is to keep on improving each game. We’re not looking at what position we’ll end up in the quarterfinals. Our focus is on the immediate task at hand. Perpetual is a very good team, we can’t take them lightly,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Karl Dimaculangan said.
The top seed squad after the second round will face the no. 4 ranked team from the other pool while the no. 2 seed will square off with the third seed from the other group in the knockout quarterfinal slated Sunday.
De La Salle University, on the other hand, has the same mission in its 4 p.m. Pool F game against Adamson University.
La Salle came back from a set down to beat University of Santo Tomas, 22-25, 27-25, 25-16, 25-21, for a 2-0 card last Sunday in the resumption of the second round action after the postponement of the 29 October playdate due to inclement weather brought by severe tropical storm “Paeng.”
The Lady Spikers will once again bank on prized recruit Angel Canino, who dropped a game-high 25 points against the Tigresses, Amie Provido, veterans Jolina Dela Cruz, Thea Gagate and Baby Jyne Soreno to beat the Lady Falcons, who can still steal the no. 1 seeding with a straight or four sets victory.
