San Sebastian took advantage of Jose Rizal University’s manpower woes with a 92-74 win yesterday in Season 98 National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.
The Stags were led by Rhinwill Yambing, who caught fire from three-point range en route to making a career-high 36 points, 33 from beyond the arc.
Yambing also hauled ten rebounds for the Stags, who now tote a 6-7 win-loss card.
The loss dropped the record of the Heavy Bombers to 6-8.
Jose Rizal was bannered by Agem Miranda’s 27 points as the Mandaluyong-based squad played with just six players due to the suspension brought about by John Amores’ violent outburst last Tuesday.
Earlier, John Abis posted a triple-double as the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta survived a late-game scare from College of Saint Benilde, 89-83, to keep its flickering Final Four hopes alive.
Abis collected 13 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists as the Altas snapped a three-game losing streak despite the Blazers’ late bid for a comeback.
Migs Oczon led a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter that cut an 88-74 deficit to five points, 88-83, with 9.9 seconds remaining in the game.
Sadly, Oczon’s three-point attempt with 6.1 seconds left bounced off the rim.
Mark Omega then split his two free throws to seal Perpetual’s sixth win in 15 matches.
Altas head coach Myk Saguiguit wanted to challenge his bigs to neutralize Will Gozum, who wound up with 13 points and six rebounds.
“We don’t have our veterans this time. This is the first time they experienced something as tense as this,” Saguiguit said.
Carlo Ferreras led the Altas with 19 points, four rebounds and two assists.
Oczon fired 22 points for the Blazers, who dropped to a 10-4 slate.
