A Filipino boxing official will play a major role during this weekend’s World Boxing Council heavyweight title fight in London.
San Francisco-based Rey Danseco has been appointed as one of the three judges for defending champion Tyson Fury’s third defense of the WBC crown against fellow British puncher Derek Chisora.
A veteran of over 40 world title fights, Danseco started working as a ring judge in 2004 after a career in sportswriting.
A native of Calauag, Quezon, Danseco’s grandest officiating stints involved some of the biggest names in the fight game.
He scored the fights of Canelo Alvarez, Ryan Garcia, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Bernard Hopkins, Amir Khan and even Gerry Penalosa, traveling the world and making key stops in Russia, Mexico, England, Australia, Canada and in Asia as well.
Danseco remains the most active Filipino boxing officials today in the international scene and probably the most prominent after referee, the Las vegas-based Carlos ‘Sonny’ Padilla.
A few years ago, the Mexico-based WBC awarded him the governing body’s Judge of the Year.
Danseco insists that judging a fight gives him the creeps.
“Just like during my early years, I still feel nervous whenever I am scoring a fight. But I remain serious (so as not to make a big mistake in scoring),” he added.
Danseco endeared himself with the late WBC president Jose Sulaiman, and later on with the amiable Mauricio, who succeeded his father.
The Fury-Chisora showdown is one of the biggest bouts taking place in the United Kingdom this year and Danseco vows to make the WBC proud anew.
