The Philippine men’s football team dropped a 1-0 loss to Vietnam in a friendly game at the Hold Day Stadium in Hanoi on Wednesday night.

Nguyen Van Quyet scored a late goal in stoppage time late in the second half to give the home time the victory.

Vietnam also spoiled Azkals head coach Josep Ferre Ybarz coaching debut with the national team ahead of the 2022 AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup this 20 December.

The Philippines will be in Group A in the competition along with Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand and Brunei.

The Azkals will face Cambodia on 20 December at the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh, site of the opening rites for the 2023 Southeast Asian Games.

The last time the Philippines was in the semifinals was back in 2018 behind the exploits of Patrick Reichelt and brothers Phil and James Younghusband.
