The Philippine men’s national football team battles Indonesia in the AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium Monday night.
Kickoff is at 8:30 p.m. with the Azkals aiming to end the group stage on a high note in front of the home fans in their first match of 2023.
The Azkals are already eliminated after a 4-0 loss to Thailand last 23 December and the Thais’ 1-1 draw with Indonesia last 26 December.
However, Azkals team captain Stephan Schrock said the squad is more eager than ever to finish their campaign with a win.
“We want to finish strong at a home game with a win if possible. Given that we have a very young team, this is not just a build-up for a tournament,” Schrock said.
“You see it in the performance but this goes deeper into football. The players carry a big weight throughout the entire year and it’s not shiny and fancy as people might expect.”
Kenshiro Daniels, one of the tournament’s top scorers with three goals, and Jens Rasmussen will be the main men for the Azkals while young guns like Jarvey Gayoso and Sandro Reyes are expected to contribute as well.
Egy Maulana Vikri and Marc Klok will be the Indonesians’ scoring threats, having scored two goals each in the tournament.
