SAN PEDRO CITY, Laguna — Alex Junsay caught fire when it mattered most, firing 28 points, while Mario Bonleon came away with another productive performance as KDL Calamba repeated over Layba Trucking Cabuyao, 97-80, to barge into the championship round of the Liga Laguna Season 3 at the San Pedro Sports Complex.
Junsay started to wax hot in the early goings as Calamba set the tone early.
Bonleon also had a solid game for Calamba, tallying 23 points and eight rebounds.
The burly but shifty Junsay hit 11-of-17 from the field, but had to be taken out of the game midway through the contest.
He returned in the second half and helped the team in topping Cabuyao, which played without the reliable Shin Manacsa, who was sidelined by an injury and his absence was clearly felt by the squad.
To make matters worse, Cabuyao’s top gun, Nikko Aguilar, had to sit on the bench for five minutes after he was called for an unsportsmanlike foul in the fourth period.
Without its two key players in the most important stretch of the match, Cabuyao lost in the knockout stage.
Calamba also dominated the then twice-to-beat Cabuyao, 110-96, in their first encounter on 28 January.
The final is set over the weekend with Data Force San Pedro taking on Calamba.
