Scotland spanks Filipinas

Scotland put the Filipinas in its place by carving out a 2-1 victory on Sunday in the 2023 Pinatar Cup in Murcia, Spain.

Lauren Davidson struck for Scotland in the 40th minutes on a screamer past Filipinas goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel, whose team dropped its second straight game after bowing to Wales, 1-0, in the opener.

The loss sent the Filipinas crashing out of contention but still has one match left—against Iceland—on Wednesday.

In the 57th minute, Rachel Corsie made it a commanding 2-0 lead after converting a header off Caroline Wei5r’s cornerkick.

Sensing that the game was slowly slipping away, the Filipinas attempted to get back and Meryll Serrano did just that by scoring a low free kick in the 90th but it was clear that time had run out as that second goal didn’t come.

It was a huge win by Scotland, which yielded to Iceland, 2-0, last week.

Still, Filipinas team captain Tahnai Annis swears the opportunity playing against highly-rated squads from Europe will benefit the players in the long run.

The ongoing tournament will serve as one of the Filipinas’ buildups for the FIFA Women’s World Cup that takes place in Australia and New Zealand and Australia in August.

“I think we’re getting a little but comfortable being uncomfortable playing these games and in the level that all of these games and matches are now, you know, if we have to come out and be clinical, we have to be (switched) on all the time, and we can’t really afford any lapses or, you know, second-guessing ourselves. I think as time goes on, we’re just learning.”
