Dov Cariño’s late-minute goal salvaged a point for the Azkals as they forced a 1-1 draw over host country Cambodia in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh Tuesday evening.
Cariño scored a header in the third minute of stoppage time off an assist from Harry Nuñez to level the playing field at 1-1.
He also scored the first goal for the Azkals in this year’s edition of the biennial meet.
A Ky Rina screamer at the 26th minute allowed the Cambodians to take an early 1-1 lead in the match.
The Philippines remains at fourth place in Group A with a 0-1-1 win-draw-loss record.
Timor Leste is up next for the Azkals at 5 p.m. Manila time.
Meanwhile, Janelle Mae Frayna and Shaina Mae Mendoza is secured at least a silver medal despite a 0-1 loss to Vietnam in the sixth round at the Phnom Penh University earlier today.
Their match vs the Cambodians in 6 May will determine the final standings of the tournament.
Both the men’s and women’s indoor hockey team lost to Malaysia in their second game of the tournament at the Dinusaur Park Hall of the Chroy Changvar International Convention and Exhibition Centre in Phnom Penh.
The men’s team lost 0-19 to the Malaysians with the women’s team absorbing a 0-12 defeat against the same country.
