PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — First-time Southeast Asian Games campaigner Arlan Arbois plucked a silver medal in the men’s marathon at the historic Angkor Wat in Siem Reap at the 32nd edition of the biennial meet on Saturday.
Arbois clocked in two hours and 33:57 minutes as Indonesia’s Agus Prayogo took home the gold with a time of 2:32:59.
Nguyen Than Hoang of Vietnam came in at third place with 2:35:49.
Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association secretary general Edward Kho told Daily Tribune said Arbois will join the national team after his stint.
“Relatively, it’s a good showing because we didn’t expect to get a medal in the men’s marathon and considering he isn’t (even) part of the national team,” Kho said in a phone conversation.
In the women’s event, Christine Hallasgo settled for the bronze despite a new personal-best clocking of 2:50:00. Indonesia’s Odekta Elvina Naibaho took the gold with a time of 2:48:14 hours.
Vietnam’s Thi Tuyet Le came in at second with 2:49:41 hours.
Kho said it was a matter of her opponents stepping up their training but was still happy with the result.
“We cannot ask for more. She did a personal best in a far more friendly weather. Her opponent was just more prepared,” Kho said.
