PHNOM PENH — Four-time SEA Games long jump gold medalist Marestella Torres-Sunang expressed her confidence in the Philippines’ obstacle race athletes saying that seeing them win gold medals this early doesn’t surprise her.
Torres-Sunang, Olympian and Asian Championship gold medalist trained the 12 competing obstacle race athletes, including Precious Cabuya and Kaizen dela Serna who dominated the women’s division at the Chroy Changvar Convention Center on Saturday.
“They can switch places. They’re both strong athletes,” wrote Torres-Sunang via Messenger to Daily Tribune.
Cabuya finished the race in 32.73 seconds, setting a new world record while dela Serna, posted a time of 35.52 seconds to grab gold and silver, respectively.
“Our obstacle team is strong and for sure, if this will be included in the next SEA Games, we can still win gold medals,” she continued.
The accomplishment of Julius Mark Rodales who also struck gold in the competition was likewise expected, according to Torres-Sunang.
“Even on our men’s side, we can see either Julius and Kevin (Pascua) alternating and anyone could win the gold medal,” added Torres-Sunang.
“They’re our top two athletes and anyone can win the gold in any given race.”
Rodales submitted a time of 25.19 seconds while Pascua, SEA Games gold medalist in Manila four years ago, clocked 26.81 to settle for a silver.
Meanwhile, assistant coach Precious Que-Aguilar said the team is right on target on its way objective.
“Our target is to win four gold medals in the SEA Games this year, so we’re right on target,” added Que-Aguilar.
