De La Salle University seeks to finish off wounded defending champion National University to claim the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament crown in Game 2 of the finals today at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Well-rested after a weeklong break since drawing first blood in the best-of-three series, the Lady Spikers are armed and ready to finally end a five-year wait to bring the title back to Taft Avenue.
Game time is at 4 p.m.
La Salle came back from a set down to beat NU in the series opener last Sunday, 18-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 15-13, to move to the cusp of winning its 12th title overall.
“We can’t stop and be content in winning Game 1. Game 1 is over and done with. We still have one more game to win and we can’t stop until we finally get the championship,” Lady Spikers prized rookie Angel Canino said.
The winger, expected to win the Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player awards, scattered 21 points and 14 excellent receptions in an impressive display of her all-around game and composure.
La Salle is on a six-game roll and is yet to lose a match against the same rival that swept the squad in last year’s tournament.
“Just like what Angel said, we just won Game 1. The series is far from over,” Lady Spikers assistant coach Noel Orcullo said.
“So need to be ready. Do what we must do and trust our system. Our goal is to get Game 2.”
