Olympian Carlos Yulo and the rest of the national gymnastics squad are set to see action in the 2023 Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships, following a very successful performance in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games.
Yulo, who clinched two gold medals in the biennial meet, will be at the forefront when the national team challenges the best gymnasts from China, Japan and other Asian countries from 10 to 18 June at the OSBC Arena in Singapore.
Aside from Yulo, also set to see action are other SEA Games gold medalists in John Ivan Cruz and Juancho Miguel Besana as well as Jan Timbang, Justine Ace de Leon and Jhon Romeo, who comprise the men’s all-around team that bagged the silver medal in the biennial meet that came to a close last week at the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh.
The men’s all-around team scored 305.25 points to come up with a bridesmaid finish behind Vietnam, which won the crown for the second straight time after posting 313 points.
Gymnastics Association of the Philippines president Cynthia Carrion said that aside from the team that got a podium finish in the biennial meet, more gymnasts are expected to join along with Filipino-American artistic gymnast Alleah Finnegan.
“It’s the same people that qualified. We’re sending a lot of names. It’s easier to remove them than to add so we’re naming all our good athletes,” Carrion said.
“We will see how well they perform and everything will come out. Hopefully, there will be no injuries.”
Yulo grabbed three gold medals and one silver medal in the previous edition of the Asian Championships in Doha.
