Mac Belo couldn’t wait to pump life into his career following his trade to Rain or Shine in the upcoming season of the Philippine Basketball Association this October.
Belo’s agent, Edgar Mangahas, told Daily Tribune that they are looking forward to the opportunities they will have with the Elasto Painters.
“We’re excited,” Mangahas said.
“We feel that with Rain or Shine, Mac will have a chance to relive his career.”
The 30-year-old Belo, an elite two-way player when he was at Far Eastern University, was considered as one of the players with bright future after being taken with the first pick in the PBA’s special draft for Gilas players.
He started his career with Blackwater before being shipped to Meralco two years ago.
But injuries slowed him down, prompting him to see action in only 42 games for Meralco since getting traded from Blackwater in exchange for Baser Amer and Bryan Faundo before taking a leave of absence in the previous Governors’ Cup.
Now healthier than ever, Belo will get a chance to redeem himself playing under Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao, a veteran mentor who gained a reputation of squeezing the best from his wards.
Interestingly, Belo also drew the interest of Guiao two years ago when he was still the general manager and head coach of NLEX.
In fact, Guiao initiated a move of acquiring Belo and found a perfect opportunity when Meralco’s veteran forward Reynel Hugnatan decided to retire to join the coaching staff while Noy Baclao had been released.
“We initiated that trade,” Guiao said, adding that Belo is expected to sign with the Elasto Painters anytime soon.
“We felt that we’ll have the opportunity of getting him. Of course, we know that his confidence level is still low, but we’ll be happy to help him increase it.”
