Kaya FC-Iloilo claimed its first Philippine Football League title following a scoreless draw forged by Cebu FC and Stallion FC on Wednesday at the Dynamic Herb-Borromeo Sports Complex in Cebu City.
With Cebu wrapping up the season with 51 points built on 15-6-1 win-draw-loss record, Kaya sealed the title after garnering 52 points on 17-1-3 record, including the points drawn from the forfeited games of the Azkals Development Team,
The ADT decided to withdraw from the league following its fruitless campaign in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games two weeks ago in Cambodia.
The Iloilo-based side has a chance to close its triumphant campaign on a high note when it battles Stallion on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Football Field.
Aside from the PFL glory, the championship also gave Kaya an automatic slot for next season’s AFC Champions League that will be held in September.
Kaya forward Daizo Horikoshi is poised to take home both the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball award after scoring 15 goals and handing out 19 assists.
