Samantha Catantan will miss the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China as she focuses on her recovery from an acute cruciate ligament tear.
The 21-year-old foil fencer said in a radio interview that she has to undergo a recovery period of eight to 12 months to get back to full strength as per her surgeon, Dr. Raul Canlas.
Catantan got injured right before the final of the women’s individual foil, surrendering the gold medal to Singapore’s Maxine Wong in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games.
The Pennsylvania State University fencer said her team also advised her to take her time so her recovery goes well.
“He (Canlas) gave me eight to 12 months for a full recovery. I saw some stories online that recovery can be a s short as six months but there’s a risk that you will be injured again,” said Catantan, who flies back to the United States next month.
“I called my coach in Penn State and they told me not to worry because they’re supportive of my recovery. I contacted the physical trainers already that will assist me when I go back there.”
The Philippine fencing team will be facing an uphill battle in the Asiad as Maxine Esteban is now playing for Ivory Coast.
Still, Catantan is thankful for Philippine Fencing Association president Richard Gomez for recommending her to consult with Canlas.
“Actually, everyone is very supportive. I felt the love and support of everybody. My teammates and federation, the PFA, and the PSC (Philippine Sports Commission) and POC (Philippine Olympic Committee) are asking me about my progress and if I need help with anything. They’re willing to support me,” Catantan said.
“PSC helped me with my expenses and my recovery expenses. They really helped me. President Richard Gomez recommended that Dr. Canlas and I am grateful for that.”
