Toyota Motor Philippines has made an exciting addition to its Hybrid Electric Vehicle lineup with the unveiling of the All-New Toyota Zenix, a seven-seater family vehicle with an emphasis on energy efficiency and comfort. The Zenix represents a strategic move by Toyota to introduce hybrid technology into the Multi-Purpose Vehicle category, thereby broadening the scope of its electrified mobility offerings in the Philippines.
Positioned as an advanced family carrier, the Zenix marries the spaciousness and reliability of a traditional Toyota MPV with the benefits of an energy-efficient, quieter ride. It thus offers modern Filipino families the ability to embrace cleaner transportation while retaining the familiar comforts of a Toyota vehicle.
The Zenix’s arrival expands TMP’s hybrid lineup, which includes the Corolla Altis, Corolla Cross, Camry, and RAV4. TMP first vice president for Vehicle Sales Operations, Danny Cruz, encapsulates Toyota’s electrification strategy by stating: “At Toyota, we believe that giving the customers the power of choice is a good way to help speed up the widespread adoption of electrified vehicles.”
This philosophy is evident in the design and features of the Zenix. The vehicle is available in two gasoline-only variants: the 2.0 Q Hybrid CVT and 2.0 V CVT, catering to different customer preferences. The 2.0 Q Hybrid CVT boasts a sporty exterior, 18-inch alloy wheels, and overfenders, while the 2.0 V CVT features 17-inch alloy wheels. Both variants include a push start ignition system and smart entry for convenience.
Toyota has also prioritized safety with the latest Toyota Safety Sense features available in the top-spec hybrid variant, including a pre-collision system, lane departure alert, dynamic radar cruise control, and more. The Zenix also offers active safety features like an anti-lock brake system and vehicle stability control as standard.
As the Zenix rides on a totally new platform, the move to a front-wheel drive layout allows for a bigger inside volume. The interiors reflect the Zenix’s premium positioning, with the hybrid variant offering captain seats with a power ottoman and power recline for a luxurious riding experience (available on the HEV variant). The MPV’s chestnut and dark gray palette and ambient lighting enhance the overall look and feel, while its flexible seating arrangements allow for ample storage space. The Zenix Q offers captain’s chairs in the middle row, but the increased interior space also means that the third row can comfortably seat three, making this MPV a full-fledged 7-seater.
Moreover, the Zenix comes equipped with modern technologies including a 7-inch Thin Film Transistor Multi-Info Display, a 10.1-inch Display Audio with Apple Carplay (Wireless) and Android Auto, and an Electronic Parking Brake. These features are designed to provide a more enjoyable and convenient driving experience. Features such as Panoramic View Monitor, Blind Spot Monitor BSM and Rear Cross Traffic Alert RCTA are also available in the HEV variant to assist the driver during parking and other driving demands.
Now, let’s address what the introduction of the Zenix might mean for the sales of the current Toyota Innova in the Philippines. Given the current Innova’s established reputation and strong sales performance, the Zenix, as a high-end “option,” could complement rather than cannibalize Innova sales. With hybrids gaining attention as a middle-ground between internal combustion vehicles and fully electric ones, a hybrid option in the MPV category, such as the Zenix, could be welcomed by Filipino consumers as an upgrade. Although the Zenix, and the new platform it rides on, is technically the “new” Innova, the current Innova still holds a great spot in the market due to its IMV-derived platform and turbodiesel option. Fair to say that the Innova as we know it will continue to prove a success story for Toyota for the foreseeable future.
Furthermore, the Zenix’s price point is within the upper range of the Innova’s pricing, making it an appealing option for customers seeking to upgrade their experience to a more luxurious, eco-friendly alternative. It’s a short-leap to a new experience that maintains the familiarity of the size and space of the more well-known Innova. The Zenix’s pricing starts at P1,953,000 for the 2.0 Q Hybrid CVT and P1,670,000 for the 2.0 V CVT.
Toyota’s decision to introduce the Zenix as a high-end alternative to the Innova could be a wise strategic move. It enables Toyota to cater to a broader range of customer preferences, offering a more upscale and eco-friendly choice while still providing the familiar comforts of a Toyota family vehicle. By doing so, Toyota continues its efforts to promote the adoption of electrified vehicles in the Philippines, contributing to the global push towards carbon neutrality.
