Northern Samar celebrated its 58th founding anniversary with the Road to Trail Challenge 2023 Marathon that started and ended in Catarman last 17 June.
Around 200 runners from Leyte and Samar composed of fun runners, professional marathoners and sports enthusiasts graced the first-ever road-to-trail marathon that featured 42K, 21K and 5K events.
Ultra marathoner Virgilio Undaloc Jr. of Catbalogan City emerged as winner in the full marathon category.
“It was a challenge but we are happy to contribute,” said Mary Jane Salomon, founder and chief operating officer of the organizing Universal Sports Promotions.
“I personally believe that the founding anniversary is an opportune time for Nortehanon to come together. We are glad that the event was a success not because it was perfectly done, but of the participation of the members of the public. As it was the first time for trail running, it started with little interest but ended with a bang. We paved the way for others to explore other ways of organizing a marathon.”
Salomon added that they recognize the importance of physical activity so they might as well spearhead the celebration of Northern Samar’s founding anniversary through a marathon event.
“Physical activity is always good for everyone,” Salomon added.
“Health is wealth and it is our resolve to promote both mental and physical health in the community. It is also a great opportunity to promote local tourism, showcase the vibrant countryside and develop sports and support education.”
The event was curated, produced and managed by USP, a social enterprise that was recently selected by the Department of Science and Technology regional office as one of the top 10 most innovative social enterprises in Eastern Visayas.
“Sports has the power to bring communities together,” Salomon said.
“And sporting events serve as a gathering point for community members, fostering a sense of pride and cementing identity within the neighborhood. Thus, we made sure to highlight the relevance of inclusivity, diversity and accessibility.”
