Things are looking bright for the country’s campaign in the Asian Games.
This is after the Philippines raked in five medals in the 2023 SEATA Perak Triathlon in Lumut, Malaysia on Saturday, 1 July.
Triathlon Association of the Philippines president Tom Carrasco Jr. said these tournaments are part of the buildup for the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China from 23 September to 8 October.
“Our buildup for the Asian Games continues. (Justine) Hermosa will be the mixed-team relay and we will send him,” Carrasco told Daily Tribune in a phone conversation.
He is talking about Hermosa who bagged the gold in the male elite junior level. He matched the male elite under-23 gold of veteran Kim Remolino.
Remolino, a 32nd Southeast Asian Games bronze medalist in the men’s triathlon, and Irienold Reig Jr. delivered a 1-2 finish for the Filipinos in the male elite under-23 event. Remolino clocked in one hour, one minute and 26 seconds while Rieg registered 1:01:33.
Lauren Plaza plucked a bronze in the female elite under-23 event after a time of 1:11:39.
Malaysia’s Esther Joy Chen Hong Li (1:07:23) and Sara Joy Chen Hong Mae (1:10:09) picked up the gold and silver medals, respectively in the event.
Over at the male elite junior event, Hermosa dominated after clocking in 1:01:26 in the event.
Katrina Salazar picked up a silver medal in the female junior elite after 1:10:38 as hometown bet Teo Sze Huo took the gold with 1:09:29.
Hermosa and Remolino are expected to join SEA Games gold medalists Kim Mangrobang and Fer Casares as they seek a podium finish in this year’s Asiad.
