Alex Eala sustains her fiery form as she beat Mi Tianmi of China, 6-3, 6-7, 6-0, in the Round of 16 of the W100 Vitoria-Gasteiz women’s singles tournament early Friday (Manila time) at the Peña Vitoriana Tennis Club in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain.
The 18-year-old Eala needed two hours and 21 minutes to escape her Chinese foe and storm into the quarterfinals of this prestigious
tournament, putting her on track of winning her fourth professional title.
She is facing Lucia Cortez Llorca in the quarterfinals at press time.
“Quarterfinal tomorrow. Vamos!!” Eala, a graduate of the world-famous Rafael Nadal Tennis Academy in Mallorca, Spain, said in a social media post.
Meanwhile, Eala and her Spanish partner, Marina Bassols Ribera, suffered a sorry 5-7, 6-1, 9-11 setback to Estelle Cascino of France and Diana Marcinkevica of Latvia in the Round of 16 of the women’s doubles event.
With the loss, Eala will have to wait for another chance to win her first professional title in the doubles event.
Aside from campaigning professionally, Eala, who is ranked No. 258 by the Women’s Tennis Association, is also gearing up for her debut in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China from 23 September to 8 October.
