Jessika Ponchet of France again showed her skill and maturity, beating Alex Eala, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, in the semifinal of the W100 Vitoria-Gasteiz women’s singles tournament Saturday at the Peña Vitoriana Tennis Club in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain.
For the third time in four meetings, the third-seed Ponchet, 26, had Eala’s number, denying her a chance of making it into her first final in the $100,000 tournament after one hour and 55 minutes of play.
Eala, a graduate of the Rafael Nadal Academy, was still delighted over his performance.
“A very positive week here in Vitoria! So happy to have reached the semifinals in this 100k tournament,” Eala, rated No. 258 in the world, said in a social media post.
Eala is using her European exposure to toughen up for the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, from 23 September to 8 October.
