The Philippine national weightlifting team picked up nine medals to open the Asian Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championships 2023 in New Delhi Friday evening (Manila time).
Alexandra Ann Diaz, the niece of Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo, picked up a gold medal in the youth women’s 40-kilogram event with a lift of 57kgs in the snatch while picking up two silver medals in the clean-and-jerk with 66kgs and her total lift at 123kgs.
Vietnam’s Nguyen Phuong Linh dominated the competition after two gold medals in the clean-and-jerk with 68kgs and her total lift at 124kgs while picking up a silver medal in the snatch with 56kgs.
Jyoshina Sabar of India took home all three bronze medals after a snatch of 55kgs and clean-and-jerk of 64kgs for a total lift of 119kgs.
Meanwhile, Prince Kiel delos Santos dominated the youth men’s 49kg event with two gold medals in the snatch (94kgs) and the total lift (210kgs) while plucking a bronze medal in the clean-and-jerk (116kgs).
In the same weight category, Eron Borres got second place with a total lift of 210kgs while taking the bronze medal in the snatch with 91 kgs and a gold medal in the clean-and-jerk with 119kgs.
Vietnamese weightlifter Bui Minh Dao took home the bronze medal with a total lift of 209kgs while snagging two silver medals in the snatch (93kgs) and the clean-and-jerk (116kgs).
The Philippines currently has four golds, three silvers and two bronzes on the first day of the tournament.
