Flying Titans strike back, rip Aussies

Sisi Rondina was in her usual dangerous form leading Choco Mucho to a clinical 25-15, 25-23, 25-10, demolition of hapless Australia in the VTV Cup on Monday in Lao Cai, Vietnam.

The high-flying hitter went on a swinging spree to smoke the Australians for the Flying Titans’ return in the win column after suffering a straight sets defeat at the hands of Vietnam 1 late Sunday.

Choco Mucho improved to a 2-1 win-loss record as it boosted its chances of advancing into the knockout semifinal of this prestigious six-nation competition.

Rondina was at the forefront of the Premier Volleyball League club’s onslaught as she rained down 17 attacks with two aces for a game-high 19 points.

“We just played our hearts out there and stuck with our game plan. We just enjoyed the game earlier,” Rondina said.

The University of Santo Tomas standout’s energy rubbed on her teammates with Caitlyn Viray, Cherry Nunag, Des Cheng, Maddie Madayag and Kat Tolentino joining the scoring fray.

Choco Mucho stamped its dominance in the third set after Australia showed resistance in the second frame, racing to a 13-1 advantage off a Rondina service winner.

Regine Arocha pushed the Flying Titans at match point 24-10 after her attack penetrated the Australians’ two-woman block before Bea De Leon put the game away with a kill off a misreceive.

Viray and Nunag added seven points each while Madayag and Des Cheng combined for 10 markers for Choco Mucho.

Australia absorbed its third loss in as many games.

The Flying Titans came off a 21-25, 19-25, 16-25, defeat the night before, losing to favored Vietnam 1 led by national team standout Tran Thi Thanh Thuy.

Choco Mucho crosses paths with Vietnam 2 today at 6 p.m. before wrapping up the eliminations tomorrow against South Korea’s Suwon City.

The top four teams after the eliminations will advance to the knockout semifinal on 24 August while the championship match is on 25 August.
