Two Calvins — Calvin Oftana and Calvin Abueva — are thrilled to see action for Gilas Pilipinas in the 19th Asian Games.
Oftana said he is excited to play in the Asian Games, especially after failing to see action in the latter part of the 32nd Southeast Asian Games dur to calf injury in their first match.
“I’m blessed and excited,” Oftana told Daily Tribune.
“It’s my first time in the Asian Games. The SEA Games was also my first time, but something happened to me. Hopefully, nothing happens to me and the rest of the team this time when we go to the Asian Games.”
Then there’s another Calvin — Abueva — who will also be playing in his first Asian Games.
Abueva said he waited for the perfect time to play in the prestigious quadrennial meet.
“We were still in college that time,” Abueva said, narrating how he nearly played in the Asian Games during his amateur days.
“I backed out. Me and Ian (Sangalang). During that time, we had three practices. We practiced at San Sebastian, we practiced for our D-League team (NLEX) and then Asian Games. Our bodies can’t take it anymore.”
Still, it’s not yet too late for Abueva.
“Now, it’s a whole new level. Asian teams have improved. We need a good preparation for this,” Abueva said.
“I never thought I would be back at the Gilas program, but you’re praying for it. Whatever I’m doing in the PBA, I just have to double my effort in the Asian Games and be more patient.”
