Unbeaten Filipino super-featherweight Charly Suarez barged into the top 15 in the latest ratings released by the Mexico City-based World Boxing Council.
Suarez, a longtime amateur standout, was listed at No. 15 in the 130-lb class, making him a viable challenger for a world title especially if he keeps on winning.
Suarez actually has company in the division with former featherweight titlist Mark “Magnifico” Magsayo rated No. 5 in the bracket that is being ruled by American O’Shaqui Foster.
Other notable names on the latest ratings include John Riel Casimero at No. 7 at super-bantamweight, Vincent Astrolabio at No.1 in the bantamweight class and Nonito Donaire at No. 11, Donnie Nietes at No. 6 and JayR Raquinel at No. 7 in the super-fly division, Dave Apolinario at No. 15 at fly and hard-hitting light-fly Miel Fajardo at No. 6, Marc John Rementizo at No. 12 and Regie Suganob at No. 14 and a five-man cast at strawweight composed of Joey Canoy (No. 3), Pedro Taduran (No. 4), Jake Amparo (No. 5), Rene Mark Cuarto (No. 12) and Lito Dante (No. 15).
Astrolabio, who fights under MP Promotions, took the top spot on the strength of his knockout victory in Thailand last month.
Suarez, managed and trained by fellow Philippine team member Delfin Boholst, is coming off a convincing win over Yohan Vasquez in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Before turning professional, Suarez, now 35, represented the Philippines in the 2016 Rio Olympics, the Asian Games and many times in the Southeast Asian Games.
He currently holds a 16-0 win-loss card with nine knockouts and is also being handled by politician-businessman Luis “Chavit” Singson.
