HANGZHOU, China — The gold medal remains elusive for Kayla Sanchez as she settled for fifth spot in the women’s 100-meter freestyle swimming competition of the 19th Asian Games at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Aquatic Center here.
The two-time Olympic medalist posted 54.69 seconds to finish behind Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong, Yang Junxuan of China, Cheng Yujie of China, and Nagisa Ikemoto of Japan.
The 25-year-old Haughey, who is swimming for the University of Michigan in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, broke the Asian record with an incredible 52.17 seconds to win the gold medal.
Coming in second as Yang in 53.11 seconds while Cheng copped the bronze in 53.91 seconds.
Sanchez, a freestyle specialist, still has a chance to win the coveted gold medal when she sees action in the women’s 100-meter backstroke on Wednesday.
