Lyceum of the Philippines University registered a 76-73 win over University of Perpetual Help System Dalta for its second straight win in Season 98 National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament at the Filoil EcoOil Centre yesterday.
With the Pirates holding onto a 74-70 lead in the fourth quarter Carlo Fererras buried a triple with 22.3 seconds remaining in the game to inch closer, 73-74.
But Vince Cunanan drained two free throws with 5.6 ticks remaining in the game for the win after Christian Pagara missed a game-tying triple in the dying seconds of the match.
In the first game, San Sebastian College finally got a victory after a 111-86 thrashing over Arellano University.
The Stags join San Beda University, last year’s finalist College of Saint Benilde and host Jose Rizal University with similar 1-1 win-loss records.
With a 64-59 lead with four minutes remaining in the third quarter, San Sebastian went on an 11-4 run, capped by a putback from James Una, at the 2:07 minute mark, for a 75-63 run and never looked back.
Stags head coach John Kallos is happy that his wards were able to execute their game plan.
“We’re happy to get the first win. Everybody responded well and we followed our gameplan,” Kallos said.
