Carlos Yulo isn’t done qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics just yet as he is also plotting to qualify in other apparatuses as well after getting a slot in the men’s floor exercise last Sunday at the 52ne FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.
Gymnastics Association of the Philippines president Cynthia Carrion told DAILY TRIBUNE that after failing to get into the final of the individual all-around, the next best step would be to qualify for each apparatus in next year’s FIG World Cup.
Yulo will focus on getting his third world championship in the final of the floor exercise on 7 October (8 October in Manila).
Meanwhile, Filipino-American gymnasts Aleah Finnegan and Kylee Kvamme are competing in the women’s all-around as of press time as they attempt to add to the list Filipino Olympians heading to Paris next year.
The 23-year-old gymnast became the second Filipino to punch a ticket to next year’s Summer Games as the best-ranked gymnast in the floor exercise in the world championships and joins World No. 2, and 19th Asian Games men’s pole vault champion EJ Obiena as the only Filipinos to qualify for the Olympics so far.
But with his qualification only good for the floor exercise, Yulo will have to compete in the remaining qualifiers for the other apparatuses to increase his chances of getting a medal.
“We going to continue with the World Cup next year to qualify for the other apparatuses. He can also qualify in the all-around through the Asian championships,” Carrion said in an online conversation.
It’s not too late for Yulo despite the dismal showing in the individual all-around in the world championships as he has two more shots of competing in all apparatuses in the Olympics.
In the FIG World Cup, Yulo will have to be consistent in each leg of the World Cup to clinch a spot in the vault, rings, parallel bars, high bar and the pommel horse.
At the Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships in June 2024, Yulo has to win in the individual all-around to punch a ticket in that same category in the French capital.
