HANGZHOU, China — Down and out, the Philippine triathlon team heads home after receiving brutal beatings here in the 19th Asian Games.
The six-man squad, which includes the best in Southeast Asia, failed to land in the podium in the competitions held in Zhenjian Province.
Matthew Justine Mendoza, Raven Faith Alcoseba, Fernando Jose Casares at Marion Kim Mangrobang wound up seventh in the mixed relay, the last event of triathlon held at the Chun’an Jieshou Sports Centre Triathlon Course
They accumulated a time of one hour, 33 minutes and 59 seconds over the course of 300-meter swim, six-kilometer bike and 1.86-km run stages.
The gold-silver-bronze winners were Japan (1:26:21), China (1:27:48) and Hong Kong (1:28:22).
Casares placed 10th in men’s individual, while Remolino was 13th. Mangrobang was 13th in women’s and Alcoseba 16th.
The triathletes were supported by the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee.
This marked the fifth successive Asiad where the Philippines failed to come home with a medal despite its success in the region. Triathlon began in Asiad during 2006 Doha.
The Japanese ruled this Asiad with three golds and one bronze.
