College of Saint Benilde snapped a two-game losing streak after an 87-72 victory over San Sebastian College in Season 99 National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament yesterday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.
The Blazers torched the Golden Stags with 13 triples as they climbed to sixth place with a 2-3 win-loss record.
Team captain Robi Nayve starred in a 10-0 run with five minutes remaining in the fourth frame for a 15-point spread, 74-59, to wrap things up.
A three-point play from reigning most valuable player Will Gozum gave Saint Benilde its biggest lead of the game at 18 points, 85-67, with 2:27 minutes left in the game.
But Blazers head coach Charles Tiu reminded his players to just focus at the task at hand for the moment and not look too far into the future.
“It’s nice to finally get a win. To be honest, we have been playing better,” Tiu said.
“I think they’re probably pressuring themselves too much by trying to win the championship. We just said: Forget about the championship for now. Let’s just go back to enjoying the game.”
Blazer Migs Oczon erupted for 29 points off a 7-of-11 shooting from the three-point line while Nayve chipped in 16 points.
Gozum produced a double-double game for Saint Benilde with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Rafael Are scored 15 points for the Stags as they sank to a 1-3 slate.
