Philippine basketball’s shooting legend Allan Caidic sets his sights on a new goal: That of running a basketball league.
A deadshot during his heydays, the Philippine Basketball Association Hall of Famer has been appointed as commissioner of the Pilipinas Super League.
Though he didn’t veer away from basketball all this time, he said the assignment is something very new to him.
“First time for me to handle a key position like this one. Well, I will do my best to achieve the expectations for the league which is to uplift its integrity,” Caidic said.
A member of the PBA’s 25 Greatest and 40 Greatest players, Caidic will take over the spot vacated by another former PBA star, Leo Isaac.
Before Isaac, Marc Pingris held the reins.
“Allan was my personal choice,” PSL president Cris Bautista said.
“If you look at the past commissioners of the league, you could tell that they’re not just PBA stars, but they were also men of integrity.”
A former PBA Most Valuable Player, Caidic was also a five-time league champion, five-time scoring champion. For many years, he held the record for the most number of three-point shots with 1,242, until it was overtaken by Jimmy Alapag in 2016 (1,250).
Caidic, however, remains as the record-holder for most number of three-point shots made in a single game with 17 and most points made by a local player (79).
The PSL’s new season, the President’s Cup, begins 9 November with teams from different parts of the country competing. Opening day will be held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Competing teams Quezon Titans, San Juan Kings-Go For Gold, Davao Occidental Tigers-Cocolife, Royce Hotel and Casino, Manila City Stars, and V-Works Bagong Kalibo Ati-Atihan, Alpha Omega Kings, Makati Circus Music Festival and Cainta NKT Sniper.
PSL is also about to wrap up its Under-21 Tournament as San Juan Kings-Go For Gold and Ner Era Hunters vie for the best-of-three championship series beginning Thursday.
