Davao Aguilas-University of Makati sets up a Copa Paulino Alcantara finals rematch with Kaya FC-Iloilo after holding onto a 1-1 draw against Cebu FC in the second leg of the semifinal at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium Friday evening.
With Davao moving on via a 2-1 aggregate score, the squad returns to the championship round for the first time since 2018.
Interestingly, Kaya and Davao were the inaugural finalists of the Copa with the Lions winning 1-0 in extra time.
Paolo Bugas scored in the 79th minute of the second leg, prompting Davao’s ticket to get punched into the final.
Cebu’s Ivan Ouano nailed a goal in the 90+11th minute, but it was too late as time trickled away.
The match didn’t end peacefully as ushers had to subdue some of the players back into the dugout.
“We expected this. I know it will be an intense match and some yellow cards will arrive,” Davao coach Aber Ruzgel said.
“We have to play against the good teams to be able to test who we really are. I think it will be an interesting match when we play against Kaya,” he continued.
