The top Filipino figure skaters will compete in the 2023 Golden Spin of Zagreb from 6 to 9 December in Sisak, Croatia.
Speaking during the “Carols on Ice” event last Sunday at the SM Mall of Asia, Philippine Skating Union president Nikki Cheng said the pair of Isabella Gamez and Alexander Korovin as well as Sofia Frank, an Asian Open Figure Skating Trophy winner, have confirmed their participation.
“We have the ISU Challenger Series of events. Isabella and Alexander are there and will represent us in the Golden Spin of Zagreb in Croatia as well as Sofia Frank,” Cheng said.
“For Isabella and Alexander, the goal is set, which is the 2026 Winter Olympics. It is not impossible since they are the first Southeast Asian pair to make it to world championships in 2023 and they will go back in 2024.”
This annual “Carols of Ice” saw various figure skaters dance to the beat of various hit songs throughout the years under the theme “Music Through The Years” and entertain the crowd before going overseas for their respective competitions.
National team coach Abraham Domdom is optimistic that the skaters will be able to perform well in their tournaments this year and by performing in the “Carols on Ice,” which is also a fundraiser for the national athletes,” it gives them time to relax and have fun.
“They can fare enough with their competitors because they train abroad. I hope their placements will be high as well,” Domdom said.
“This fundraising show is for them to let go of the pressure and give them a refresher before going to their tournaments.
