University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 86 basketball commissioner Xavier Nunag took a leave of absence due to a family health crisis.
The league announced the development on Friday, 17 November, and expressed its understanding and support for his decision.
“In light of these circumstances, the UAAP fully supports Commissioner Nunag’s need to prioritize his family’s well-being during this critical time,” the UAAP said in a statement.
Nunag recommended deputy commissioner Atty. Mariana Lopa to be the acting commissioner during his leave of absence, which the Board of Managing Directors approved.
“Atty. Lopa will be taking over the responsibilities until the return of Commissioner Nunag to ensure the seamless continuation of technical basketball-related matters within the UAAP,” the UAAP said.
Deputy Commissioner Marvin Bienvenida, on the other hand, will continue to serve in his role, providing valuable support to maintain the league’s technical operations.
UAAP Executive Director Atty. Rene Saguisag Jr. retains his role as a vital check and balance within the Basketball Commissioner’s Office, ensuring transparency and fair play in the league.
UAAP basketball is already on its last two elimination round playdates.
Under Nunag’s watch, the league slapped a series of suspensions on three referees last month and on University of the East center Precious Momowei after a second unsportsmanlike foul infraction last Tuesday.
Adamson University coach Nash Racela, on the other hand, was spared sanctions after blasting the officiating in the Falcons’ loss to defending champion Ateneo de Manila University last week.
