The upcoming Philippine National Games will have ranking points for those looking to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association secretary general Edward Kho said in a phone conversation that those who want to bolster their World Athletics rankings may play in the PNG.
The PNG will be set from 17 to 22 December in the National Capital Region.
“The points given here are around 40 points, the same number given at the Southeast Asian Games,” Kho said.
“It’s good news for those who are hoping to get an Olympic slot because it’s an added competition for them to add more points.”
Long jumper Janry Ubas could benefit from the PNG since he is aiming to join Paris.
Currently, pole vaulter EJ Obiena is the only track-and-field athlete to book a spot in the Summer Games after clearing the qualifying height of 5.82 meters in Sweden last July.
Kho also said Filipino athletes based overseas can join the PNG also to boost their respective rankings.
“We notified Kayla Richardson because she was asking about the competitions. We told her about the Philippine National Games but she hasn’t responded yet,” Kho said.
