The University of Santo Tomas closed out its forgettable season with a 57-53 win over Far Eastern University in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 86 men’s basketball tournament yesterday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Growling Tigers snapped its six-game losing streak and ended the league with a 2-12 win-loss record.
UST had a six-point lead, 56-50, before Tamaraw Jorrick Bautista drained a triple with 21 seconds left in the game to threaten one last time.
Tigers team captain Paul Manalang then split his two free throws with 19 seconds left in the clock to put the game in the bag.
For UST head coach Pido Jarencio, it was a good end to the squad’s dismal campaign.
“From the get-go, we were focused. For the players, enough was enough and was time for them to get their second win of the season after all those losses,” Jarencio said.
“It’s still a bad season after winning two of our 14 games but we’re still fighting. I take full responsibility for everything that happened this season.”
“I take full responsibility. We did everything we could to help UST to be better this season but we fell short,” Jarencio said.
Christian Manaytay had 12 points and nine rebounds for UST with MIgs Pangilinan adding 10 points for UST.
