Phoenix Super LPG’s young unit once again proved steadier down the stretch as it outlasted Blackwater, 111-106, in the Philippine Basketball Association Friday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Import Jonathan Williams flirted with a triple-double performance while mainstay Jason Perkins used his versatility to the hilt as the Fuel Masters proved to be a step faster in beating the Bossing’s defense.
Perkins was the gamechanger as he knocked in 23 points and eight boards as none among the Bossing defenders can keep up with him.
He was complemented by Williams, a former Los Angeles Laker, who had 21 points to go along with 12 rebounds and eight assists.
It was the second straight victory for the Fuel Masters, who had to repulse repeated rallies from a Blackwater team that lost Troy Rosario to foul disqualification midway through the final quarter.
Phoenix Super LPG also picked up a tense 99-98 win over Rain or Shine on 18 November at the Ynares Center in Antipolo, but the latest win allowed the Fuel Masters to improve their standings to 3-1 and the solo second spot behind undefeated Magnolia.
“He (Jason) played his best game in four games and he did a great job limiting the production of Blackwater”s import,” said Phoenix Super LPG coach Jamike Jarin.
“The stats won’t show it, but he made things difficult for Blackwater’s import.”
Blackwater reinforcement Chris Ortiz played his most productive game, finishing with 35 points and 13 rebounds, but Phoenix outscorted its rival, 52-40, in points inside the paint.
