Valuing discipline more than talent, NLEX decided to part ways with temperamental import Thomas Robinson and brought in Stokley Chaffee Jr., in time for the Road Warriors’ game on Friday against Magnolia
A product of Tennessee State, Chaffee previously saw action in Cyprus, playing for Omonia Nicosia for three seasons from 2019 to 2021 then spent the past two years playing in Finland.
The 26-year-old Chaffee will take over the spot of Robinson, a veteran of the National Basketball Association, who engaged NorthPort team manager Pido Jarencio and team governor Erick Arejola in a heated confrontation in the Road Warriors’ 112-104 win last on 22 November at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
But Robinson’s actions of skipping team’s practices and going on an unplanned vacation prompted the Road Warriors to make a drastic change.
In statement released to media, team manager Larry Fonacier shared the rationale behind Robinson’s sacking.
“Thomas Robinson’s departure from the NLEX Road Warriors was a difficult but necessary decision. We value discipline, commitment, and teamwork, and unfortunately, his taking an unplanned vacation and skipping team practices, compromised these principles,” wrote Fonacier.
“The team’s success depends on a collective effort and a shared commitment, and we will continue to uphold these standards as we forge ahead in the season.”
Chaffee Jr. is excited to play his first PBA game.
“I’m really happy and excited. It’s something new for me. I wouldn’t say it’s pressure, but rather high expectations. There are expectations from me not only on the court but also off the court, and, obviously, to win. I hope I can meet those expectations.”
