The “Driven to Serve” awards, established by The Society of Philippine Motoring Journalists, recognizes outstanding CSR efforts of vehicle manufacturers in the Philippines. On its sixth edition, Honda Cars Philippines Inc. was once again a major recipient after getting three platinum awards in a ceremony held last 7 December.
HCPI was recognized for its “Teen Smart with Honda SENSING Demonstration for Students”; “Recycling of Used Lead Acid Batteries and Industrial Oil;” and “Innovation Contest for Senior High School Students in the Philippines.”
“We are thankful for these accolades that help us reach more people so that our road safety, education, and environment activities will be able to generate a meaningful impact involving more people and organizations,” said Rie Miyake, HCPI president.
The “Teen Smart with Honda SENSING Demonstration for Students” is HCPI’s sustained effort to promote road safety through interactive learning sessions for college students. This particular project was done in partnership with AIESEC Philippines, an international organization of student youth leaders.
The training program includes classroom instruction on safe driving behavior which is reinforced with a guided experiential drive of Honda SENSING-equipped models such as the All-New BR-V, Civic and HR-V.
In pursuit of Honda’s global target of zero-traffic collision fatalities by 2050, HCPI organizes educational programs on road safety for its different stakeholders such as the youth, through Teen Smart that started in 2004.
To strengthen their consciousness and appreciation for road safety, the learning sessions were improved with the addition of a Honda SENSING demonstration to better understand how technology is applied in protecting the safety of drivers, passengers, as well as pedestrians and other road users.
Honda has been reinforcing its vehicles with the Honda SENSING suite of safety features to realize the vision of “Safety for Everyone.”
The second Platinum award for HCPI, the “Recycling of Used Lead Acid Batteries and Industrial Oil (Bantay Baterya and Bantay Langis),” aims to reduce resource consumption and pollution through the proper disposal of hazardous lead-acid batteries and used oils.
It started in 2006 when HCPI inked a recycling partnership program with ABS-CBN’s Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation and Oriental-Motolite Marketing Corporation. The recycling effort was later expanded to other stakeholders such as associates, dealers, suppliers, and customers as it strives to cultivate a mindset of environmental protection.
Since the program started, approximately 110,000 kilograms of used lead acid batteries and 10,000 liters of used oils have been collected and recycled.
Aside from conserving resources, landfill space and energy, and avoiding further land and water contamination, the funds generated from the recycling effort are used in supporting various environmental projects of Bantay Kalikasan such as the protection and preservation of the La Mesa Watershed and maintenance of the La Mesa Eco Park.
The third Platinum award is the “Innovation Contest for Senior High School Students in the Philippines,” a competition for senior high school students organized by HCPI in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute.
