After retiring from competitive play last May, Reynel Hugnatan made a surprising return as he suited up for the MisOr Mustangs in the Pilipinas Super League.

The 45-year-old Hugnatan was still a force to be reckoned with as he fired 10 points, including two three-pointers, in the Mustangs’ 88-80 victory over the Cam Norte Warriors on Wednesday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

Hugnatan said he’s feeling better and is in great shape despite walking away from Meralco in the Philippine Basketball Association seven months ago.

“I still feel I’m pretty much in tip-top condition,” Hugnatan said.

“It’s a great opportunity since I am still being able to play.”

“But more than the scoring, I think I can still be able to provide leadership to the team, which to me is more important.”

Bolts team manager Paolo Trillo said Hugnatan sought their permission and that from the Philippine Basketball Association to revive his career in the fledgling regional league.

“He asked permission from commissioner (Willie) Marcial and he was allowed to play, knowing that there’s no conflict with the league,” Trillo said.

“I think Reynel is still in great shape. Every time the team works out, he joins the players. That’s how much he takes care of his body.”

Hugnatan is the latest high-profile former PBA star to play in the PSL after Jayjay Helterbrand, Marc Pingris and KG Cañaleta, who are all of them playing for Biñan.

Right before the start of the season, the Bolts announced that Hugnatan will be retiring to give way for younger, more promising players under the tutelage of youthful mentor Luigi Trillo and coaching consultant Nenad Vucinic of Serbia.

The Bolts, however, still included Hugnatan in the coaching staff, giving him an active role in the development of their young frontcourt.

Trillo said Hugnatan will still be part of their bench despite playing in the PSL.
