A new team has joined the Premier Volleyball League wars.
Strong Group Athletics formally entered the fray as the league’s 11th club, taking over the Gerflor franchise for the coming 2024 season set to begin on 17 February.
The team will be the second professional women’s volleyball squad of the business tycoon Frank Lao’s franchise joining sister team Farm Fresh.
“We are truly thankful to Frank Lao and Strong Group Athletics for not only helping pay the salaries of the Gerflor Defenders last year but also for taking the bold step of starting a second team in the PVL,” PVL president Ricky Palou said.
“This shows their strong commitment to the development and success of volleyball in the Philippines.”
Lao, a sportsman who also supports local basketball, expressed excitement for the coming season.
“Putting up a second team in the Premier Volleyball League is a no-brainer for us. The PVL has been a consistent source of entertainment for fans of all ages, and we are excited to contribute to the league in whatever way we can,” he said.
“Having a second team will lead to more opportunities for Filipino volleyball players and coaches. We believe in the potential of our athletes, and by providing additional platforms for them to showcase their talents, we are contributing to the growth of volleyball in the country.”
Lao’s company is the fourth franchise with sister teams after Rebisco’s Creamline and Choco Mucho, the Manny V. Pangilinan group’s PLDT and Cignal, and Akari and Nxled.
SGA has yet to announce the team’s composition and head coach.
