New club Capital1 Solar Energy is looking to build a formidable lineup as it gears up for its maiden campaign in the 2024 Premier Volleyball League set to open next month.
Although the league has yet to formally name the Power Spikers as its 12th member that will replace the disbanded F2 Logistics, it had already announced the staging of a two-day tryout starting Tuesday at the San Sebastian College Gym.
Capital1, which will have sisters Milka and Mandy Romero as team owners, has also tapped multi-titled mentor Roger Gorayeb to take the reins as head coach in his return to the league after three years.
Gorayeb has yet to respond to Daily Tribune to formally confirm his appointment but Capital1 had already tasked him to supervise the tryouts.
In fact, the veteran tactician, whose last stint in the PVL was with PLDT during the 2021 Open Conference, shared Capital1 Solar Energy’s Facebook page’s post calling for interested players for the tryouts.
Close to 100 players from various clubs, colleges and universities have signified to join the tryouts — all looking forward to see action in the country’s hottest sporting league and be part of the “newest kid on the block.”
Both Milka and Mandy, daughters of sportsman Mikee Romero, are thrilled in their initial foray in the sporting world although both are resigned to the idea that they have to go through the proverbial eye of the needle before beating the league giants.
Milka was a former co-captain of the Ateneo football team while Mandy, who graduated Magna Cum Laude at Georgetown University in Washington DC, was a Muay Thai practitioner.
Capital1 will join Strong Group Athletics, who took over the spot of Gerflor, as the PVL retained a 12-club field.
SGA, sister team of Farm Fresh owned by businessman Frank Lao, has yet to name its coach and team composition.
Member clubs have been beefing up their respective rosters with major signings ahead of the season-opening tournament set to begin on 20 February.
