Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala jumped to No. 184 — her highest ranking in the Women’s Tennis Association since turning professional four years ago.
The 18-year-old Eala jumped three spots from No. 187 to No. 184 following a victory with Darja Semenistaja of Latvia in the women’s doubles event of the W50 Pune in India over the weekend.
The Filipino-Latvian tandem delivered a 7-6, 6-3 win over Naiktha Bains of the United Kingdom and Fanny Stollar of Hungary to win the title and pocket a total of $40,000.
Prior to that, the Rafael Nadal Academy alumnus made it to the quarterfinal of the women’s singles event before dropping a 6-7, 0-6 loss to Semenistaja.
Eala, who failed in her bid to see action in the main draw of the Australian Open, is still far from done as she is campaigning in another tournament in India — the W50 Indore — before competing in the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open set from 3 to 11 February at the International Tennis Centre in Zayed Sports City.
